Firm History

Capps, Cantwell, Capps & Byrd is a full-service Tennessee law firm dedicated to our clients and their needs. The law firm was established in 1952 by the late Paul R. Capps, and the firm has been providing a broad range of legal services ever since. Frank P. Cantwell, Jr. joined the firm in 1974, Christopher P. Capps in 1983 and David S. Byrd in 1994.

Our Founder

Paul R. Capps, the founder of the firm, was born in Donnellson, Tennessee, on September 27, 1922.  The grandson of the late Governor A. H. Roberts, Mr. Capps graduated from Cumberland University School of Law in 1947 and practiced law for 55 years before his death in 2003.  Personal counsel for Senator Herbert S. Walters, he represented many corporations and organizations during his career in litigating and assisting in the formation of new industry as Morristown grew from town to city.  Mr. Capps served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict and returned to Morristown to resume his practice after his honorable discharge.  He was a devoted family man to his church, First United Methodist Church in Morristown; to his spouse, Marie Ready Capps and to his four children, Diane C. Noe, Claudia C. Bonnyman, Paul C. Kyser and Christopher P. Capps.
